VAN PELT. Died 28-07-1927. Funeral services of Justice of the PeaceWinfield Scott Van Pelt were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at theJacoby Brothers Chapel on North State Street, Rev. Harrold S. Farril,pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. He was born May 2,1848, on a farm 5 miles northeast of Jerseyville and passed from thislife at his home in this city, Thursday, 7 am, July 28. At the time ofhis departure, he was 79 years, 2 months, and 26 days of age. He wasthe son of Penelope (Stout) and Ralph Hageman Van Pelt, who were bothnatives of New Jersey. He was reared on his father's farm and whenopportunity offered, attended the district school near his home,taking advantage of such meager educational advantages as wereoffered. Nov 16, 1869, he was married to Miss Sarah J. Norris who diedduring the autumn of 1870. She was a native of Preble County, Ohio andto this union 1 son, Charles, now deceased, was born. July 6, 1876, hewas united in marriage with Miss Alice Burch, who was born inJerseyville, a daughter of David and Mary (Fields) Burch, natives ofKentucky. To this union 3 daughters were born. They and their mothersurvive. The daughters are, Mrs. Virginia Wood of Hunington Beach,California, Mrs. Thomas A. Kraus of St. Louis, and Mrs. LeonardGlassbrenner of Jerseyville. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 1g-grandchild and 1 sister, Mrs. Hanna Thatcher of this city. After hisfirst marriage he followed farming but later moved to Jerseyvillewhere he engaged in the packing industry. Later he learned thecarpenter trade and in the course of time became a contractor andbuilder, many of the present homes in Jerseyville having been built byhim. In 1909 he retired as a carpenter and was later Elected Justiceof the Peace of Jersey Township which official position he held up tothe time of his death, although he had not been active as such forseveral years.
