Dies at Age 59

Alton Ill 3 Days

Leslie Chamberlain, 59, sign painter, died, at mid-morning todayshortly after he was taken in a Gent ambulance to St. Joseph'sHospital. He had been ill three days, Suffering a heart condition anda cold, and Monday night his condition took a turn for the worse athis home, 2114 Central avenue.
Well-known and a native of Alton, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. W.Chamberlain. His father was proprietor of a drugstore on Third streetat the foot of Belle street and young Leslie started as a pharmacistin the store.
He is survived hy his widow, Lucille; two sons, Leslie jr., who isemployed at Wagner Electric Corp., St. Louis, and Pvt. Gary inductedinto the army three weeks ago and expected to return from Camp Gordon,Ga.; a daughter, Miss Barbara Louise at the Central avenue address; abrother, Harold, also a sign painter; a sister, Mrs, Ernie (Lucille)Smith of Springfield, Mo.
Les Chamberlain was widely known as a sign painter. More than 40 yearsago his signature "LC", in his own design, was familiar tomovie-goers. That was in the day when movies were new, and betweenreels advertising slides were flashed on the screen. Chamberlain wasAlton's pioneer in painting such slides, and his skill was such thathis slides rivaled those of commercial companies.
The "LC" signature was known throughout the Alton area, where it, wason signboards and windows. An affable man, he never was irritated byyoungsters; even when he was doing delicate sign work.
From 1947 to 1950, Chamberlain was employed at Maguire Sign Co. Forabout a year he had operated his own shop. During World War II he hadbeen employed at Western Cartridge Co. and prior to that had operatedhis own sign shop.
The body is at Gent funeral home pending funeral arrangements whichare awaiting word from the son in the service.

Leslie Chamberlain Rites Set Friday

Following arrival in Alton this morning of Pvt. Gary Chamberlain fromCamp Gordon, Ga., arrangements were completed for the funeral of hisfather, Leslie Chamberlain, who died unexpectedly Tuesday.

Rites will be read at 2 p. m. Friday in Gent funeral home by the Rev.William H. Brady, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Intermentwill be in Alton cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after7:00 p. m. today.
